As a naturopathic doctor, this is also the busiest time of year for me, with patients coming into the office with their first colds and sore throats of the season and complaining of sleepless nights, stress and anxiousness. So today, I’ll share some of my tips to help you through it. The first thing I recommend is: 1. Mindfulness Meditation – Meditation is a powerful ancient practice that is gaining popularity. And research has shown that it’s a great tool for reducing stress and negative emotions. If you haven’t tried meditation, it doesn’t take much to get started. You can join a group, take a mindfulness meditation course or simply set aside a few minutes each day to be mindful - to slow down, to observe yourself and your surroundings without judgement.
2. Next, I often recommend herbal medicines such as Kava and Lavender – Kava - is a tropical plant that has been used for generations in traditional Polynesian ceremonies. Studies in humans and animals have confirmed that Kava may work by increasing serotonin – a neurochemical that acts as your body’s natural antidepressant. I prescribe Kava to patients with anxiety and sleep disturbances from stress.
3. Lavender is another herb that I get great results with. You may be familiar with the essential oil, however, it can also be taken orally in a tea or capsule form. This is another herb I prescribe in practice for anxiety and insomnia.
