Essential Guide for Happy Back to School Breakfasts
The chaotic wake-up. We’ve all had these mornings and wish we didn’t. Finding your morning flow might take a few tries and tweaks, but taking the time to create enjoyment in your morning WILL pay off. And the key to making it all work come September is starting now. Here are some tips to help make the mornings easier.
Before we get lost planning our day, take a quick second to simply say “Good Morning” to each other, pets and even the plants. A lovely habit, which aids in creating a moment of acknowledgment, appreciation and good wishes for those you share your space with. Even the littlest of kiddies will appreciate a warm welcome to the day, and will likely pay it forward to others at school. This also teaches children (and adults) how to set the tone for the day.
When we wake up, typically we’re a bit dehydrated. Drinking a glass of room temperature water signals to your body that you’re ready for the day. Why room temperature? Anything too cold or hot can impair your digestive system, and you want full power for your first meal. Need flavour? Try adding fresh lemon, or some Ener-C.
A good morning stretch (try adding a little happy music) can create good vibrations, setting the tone of for the day. Going to school means much time sitting, so the opportunity to wake up the body and get it moving and flowing is not one to be missed. Imagine: a happy morning with kitchen dancing and shared breakfast – it’s possible. Create it! Fun Idea: take turns picking the week’s morning song. From classical to reggae, there is something for everyone.
During the school week, eating breakfast is essential. You expect the brain to work hard all day, so support this important organ with nutrients. Certain foods contain nutrients that prove to be beneficial for cognitive function and will also give you sustained energy for the day.
Here are some top breakfast foods, to fuel your brain.
Steel Cut Oats
This is actually the easiest breakfast to serve up in the mornings. Invest in a slow-cooker. Find them at your secondhand store for $5.00 or so. Toss in the oats just before bed, and you’ll wake up to a ready-to-serve breakfast. Having a self-serve topping station encourages and inspires kids to connect to their food while creating easy, healthy dishes. One of our favourites is lemon, coconut, and cranberry oats. Check out the recipe below.
Farm Fresh Eggs
Eggs are a powerhouse of nutrients that feed our brains: phosphatidylserine, lecithin, choline, and omegas. They all contribute towards cognitive function as well as offer whole-body benefits. Choosing farm-fresh is a must, so find out where your local farmer’s markets are located. Of course, you want to consume happy eggs, not eggs created in a stressful, cramped, unhealthy environment. Did you know eggs in stores often sit for months before consumption? They do. Choose fresh!
Some people are not the breakfast-type. They need a couple of waking hours to build up the digestive fire. But getting nutrients is still important, and a smoothie is a great option. Add in some hemp protein for extra energy. If a smoothie is still too heavy, make a juice-type drink. Try mixing Ener-C and one scoop of Miracle Reds. It tastes like juice but provides lots of vitamins, minerals, electrolytes.
Hemp Seeds and Organic Greek Yogurt
This is a creamy, rich-tasting, high protein meal, and you can make it different every day. Try adding fruit, shredded coconut, a drizzle of maple syrup, or a scoop of Miracle Reds. You can make a beautiful parfait so that kids feel like breakfast is a dessert!
